About Me

My photo
I'm a life-long New Englander, father of 4 challenging kids (I know: I'm supposed to say "wonderful", but while that'd be true, technically speaking, it'd also be misleading), and fortunate husband to my favorite wife of more than 20 years. I've got over 20 years experience breaking things as a test engineer, quality engineer, reliability engineer, and most recently (and most enjoyably) a Product Safety / EMC Compliance Engineer. In the photo, I'm on the left.

Archery Lessons

One thing that I've been passively interested in for a long, long time is archery.

I have owned a recurve bow for many years now, and always had this 'I'd like to get a target and start messing around with that' inkling. My family has a generations-long tradition of procrastination, and so it is that only recently (in part an effort to get the "kids" (in quotes because they are much older now, and for the most part somewhere between child and adult) off of their video games and outside actually doing something) that I actually took an active step in getting out and playing at archery.

Thus, we tripped down to the local sporting goods store and got the bow strung, bought a target, and some arrows, and set things up in the back yard.

We are all in the family pretty new at this, though, so we miss the target more often than we hit it.

I guess the second scion needed some inspiration...call it focus...whatever you will. He did this:

You may be able to see that the lad hit the bunny too: just above its stuffy little heart. This, from the family vegetarian!

  1. You could always post a photo of your "favourite" politician there.

    1. Hehe...the stack would be so thick that the arrow could't penetrate!

  2. Good for you for prying the IPod, iPad,, iPhone or other eleectronic gadgets out of your kids hands and getting them outside and moving.

  3. I strongly discourage your family from owning or using sharp objects at high velocities.

  4. Very timely of you- archery has become fashionable again. Can Robin Hood be far behind? I'm pretty bad at it, but I'm fairly good with a gun. ;)

    1. I've never shot a gun, but I think that going to a shooting range might be in my future; it's always a good idea to try things like that.

As for Robin Hood, I don't think he ever went away! They seem to come out with a new Robin Hood show or movie every three or five years. There should be one due to come along soon, I think.

The Russel Crowe Robin Hood is very good; right up there with the Errol Flynn one AND the Disney one! Hoodalolly!

    1. Our dog gets most of them. Our kids are old enough that they don't get many of them anymore, but there's a huge stash of them in the backyard (animals, not kids) that she (the dog) has stolen through the years.

I keep thinking that the kid will run them down with the lawn mower, but that doesn't seem to happen...better off stapling them to a target, I guess. More challenge. :)

  6. This looks like a great hobby. I'd love to try archery. Till then, I've got Wii Archery... which, you know, isn't even close.

    1. I'm very new to the sport, but it has been fun for the few days that I've been able to play at it. I need some hay bales to prevent arrows from flying into the forest, but I'd definitely recommend it. Careful of the beer though...beer and archery probably aren't good bedfellows. :)

  7. I'm waiting for you to come home and find that he's been shooting at empty beer cans.

...and then wondering who emptied those cans...
